EPRI Applies Airline Industry Inspection Technique

June 26, 2020

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) has evaluated the application of an inspection technology developed for jet aircraft engines to help operate industrial and power sector gas turbines more safely and reliably. EPRI's evaluation focused on applying Vibrant Corporations Process Compensated Resonance Testing (PCRT) for hot section blades, finding that the technology's use can decrease the risk of turbine blade failure and extend the useful life of gas turbine components—enhancing safe operation while saving time and money.

During the testing, EPRI has compiled model-specific blade frequency characteristics, including data on more than 11,000 blades to date, a database which continues to grow. The findings of EPRI's research will be published in an American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) journal this summer.

Verge Fund Names New Director of Finance

Verge Fund, the state's second-largest venture capital firm, has named its new director of finance.

Chris Gregory, a New Mexico native, started handling Verge's finances Tuesday, managing general partner Tom Stephenson told Albuquerque Business First. Last year the firm managed nearly $40 million, according to Business First's latest Venture Capital Firms List.

Chris Gregory has been named as Verge Fund's director of finance.

Gregory, a certified public accountant, was brought on a week after previous CFO Amanda Giannini stepped down to become head of finance for fast-growing technology company Descartes Labs. This marks Gregory's first go at heading finances for a venture capital firm.

In 2012, he received a Bachelor of Accountancy and a Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in finance from New Mexico State University. He has worked as an auditor for national professional services firm CliftonLarsonAllen LLP for five years before joining Verge.

Stephenson said he was excited to welcome Gregory to the team.

"Chris [Gregory]’s skills and experience are an excellent match to the director of finance position and he will continue the strong tradition of transparency and efficiency in the back-office functions, coupled with strong investor relations that are critical to the success of a professional venture capital firm like Verge," he said.

Gregory said he was glad to get the job as well.

“Through my years at a CliftonLarsonAllen, I gained invaluable skills and experience that put me in an amazing position to become the director of finance at Verge," Gregory said. "As a new member of the Verge team, I hope to contribute to the continued success of one of the leading venture capital firms in New Mexico.”

Peter Soliz, founder and CEO of Albuquerque-based VisionQuest, said his company’s rapid retinal screening technology for diabetics might still be languishing in a University of New Mexico lab if it weren’t for the federal government’s Small Business Innovation Research program. VisionQuest has received 15 SBIR grants for a total of $16.3 million since launching in 2008, allowing it to fully develop the retinal-imaging technology that Soliz and other engineers originally created at UNM.

That federal funding also allowed it to build additional, spin-off technologies to screen diabetic patients for nerve damage in their feet, diagnose retinopathy in infants born prematurely and to identify malarial retinopathy, which can indicate cerebral malaria in patients. Click here to read more.
